Remember that old phrase 'laughter is the best medicine'?, well it's true...somewhat. Laughter has many physical, social, and psychological benefits, some of which you may be surprised by. The simple act of laughing can boost your immune system and mood, trigger the release of endorphins, increase blood flow, ease feelings of stress and anxiety, strengthen relationships and can even reduce pain!
When you laugh, even in the middle of a bad mental health day, your problems can seem a little less painful and a little bit more manageable. Laughing when you're feeling scared or anxious can temporarily stop you from feeling those emotions and gives your body and mind a chance to relax and recharge. It also allows you to take a step back from an overwhelming situation and view it in a more realistic and lighthearted way. I find that the best way to disarm a bad mood is by finding humour in the darkest of places and laughing about it with my friends, because I know that they're right there with me and they accept me for all my ever changing moods.
